Description

This classic American stuffing combines bread cubes, cornbread, and oats with a blend of herbs and spices. It is cooked with turkey drippings and giblet broth to achieve a deeply savory and moist texture. Perfect for holiday roasts or as a standalone side dish.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Use both flavored and plain breads in the stuffing.
  2. Mix bread, oats, and seasonings in a large bowl.
  3. Remove neck and giblets from turkey; set aside.
  4. Melt bacon drippings in a skillet.
  5. Cook onion until tender, then without draining, melt butter (not margarine) in the onions and add to dry ingredients.
  6. Mix very well.
  7. Stir in crumbled cornbread and sunflower seeds, and stuff turkey.
  8. Bake breast side down until done.
  9. Boil neck and giblets in water with seasonings until done (about 20 minutes).
  10. Discard neck and giblets.
  11. Add strained broth to leftover uncooked stuffing.
  12. When turkey is done, remove it from roasting pan and add all drippings to uncooked stuffing.
  13. Uncooked stuffing will be extremely wet.
  14. Preheat oven to 325°F, spray casserole with cooking spray, fill with stuffing, and bake covered for 30 minutes.
