Ingredients

Directions

  1. Hard boil the 5 eggs, then peel and color them with egg dye. Let them dry completely.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, blend the white sugar, salt, yeast, and 1 cup of the flour together.
  3. In a saucepan, combine 2/3 cup milk and butter, heating slowly until the liquid is warm and the butter is melted.
  4. Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and beat 125 strokes with a wooden spoon.
  5. Add the 2 room temperature eggs and 1/2 cup flour (or enough to make a thick batter). Beat vigorously for 2 minutes.
  6. Stir in enough additional flour to make a ball of dough that draws away from the sides of the bowl.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead for about 10 minutes, working in the anise seed, candied fruit, and chopped almonds.
  8. Shape the dough into a loaf or ring, pressing the colored eggs into the surface.
  9. Place on a baking sheet and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. While warm, brush with a glaze made from confectioners' sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract.
  12. Sprinkle with multicolored sprinkles before the glaze sets. Let cool before serving.
