Directions
-
Hard boil the 5 eggs, then peel and color them with egg dye. Let them dry completely.
-
In a large mixing bowl, blend the white sugar, salt, yeast, and 1 cup of the flour together.
-
In a saucepan, combine 2/3 cup milk and butter, heating slowly until the liquid is warm and the butter is melted.
-
Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and beat 125 strokes with a wooden spoon.
-
Add the 2 room temperature eggs and 1/2 cup flour (or enough to make a thick batter). Beat vigorously for 2 minutes.
-
Stir in enough additional flour to make a ball of dough that draws away from the sides of the bowl.
-
Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead for about 10 minutes, working in the anise seed, candied fruit, and chopped almonds.
-
Shape the dough into a loaf or ring, pressing the colored eggs into the surface.
-
Place on a baking sheet and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
-
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
-
While warm, brush with a glaze made from confectioners' sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract.
-
Sprinkle with multicolored sprinkles before the glaze sets. Let cool before serving.
