Description

This hearty Greek-style meat sauce offers a deep, savory flavor profile perfect for pasta dishes like Pastitsio or Moussaka. Made with ground beef chuck, it features a robust base of finely chopped onions, garlic, and tomato paste, all simmered slowly to develop complex textures. The addition of dry white wine and mixed pickling spices provides aromatic depth, while the long, slow cooking process tenderizes the meat and melds the flavors into a luxurious consistency. This versatile sauce is ideal for family dinners, meal prepping, or freezing for future use, bringing authentic home-style comfort to your table.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef chuck and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no pink remains.
  3. Drain excess fat from the pan if necessary, then transfer the browned meat to a slow cooker.
  4. In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  5. Add the chopped onions and sauté until softened and glazed, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Transfer the sautéed onions to the slow cooker with the meat.
  7. Add the tomato paste, minced garlic, mixed pickling spice, dry white wine, salt, and freshly ground pepper to the slow cooker.
  8. Stir all ingredients together thoroughly to combine.
  9. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 hours, stirring once or twice during the cooking process.
  10. Remove the spice bag if used, and stir the sauce before serving.
