These Mom's Cinnamon Rolls are the ultimate comfort food, featuring a tender, yeasted dough rolled with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Sprinkle yeast into 3 cups of warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Mix well and let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add 3 cups of flour to the yeast mixture and beat well with a beater or mixer until combined.
  3. Let the sponge mixture rise until spongy, approximately 30 minutes.
  4. Beat 3 eggs vigorously for 5 minutes until they are frothy and fluffy.
  5. Soften 3/4 cup of margarine and add 1 cup of sugar. Beat really well until the mixture is very creamy.
  6. Add the creamy margarine mixture to the beaten eggs and beat until well blended. Add salt and mix.
  7. Add the egg and margarine mixture to the risen sponge mixture.
  8. Add approximately 4 to 5 cups of flour and beat with a beater really well until smooth.
  9. Continue adding the remaining flour until the dough is smooth enough to handle.
  10. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead until it is no longer sticky and easy to handle. You do not need to knead in all the flour if the dough becomes too stiff.
  11. Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  12. Grease 2 large rectangular baking pans with margarine. Sprinkle liberally with brown sugar (about 1/4 inch deep) and dot with soft butter (1 stick per pan).
  13. Sprinkle the pans very lightly with water to help prevent the sugar from burning and sticking.
  14. Punch down the risen dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  15. Turn out the dough and divide it in half. Roll one half into a rectangle approximately 1/2 inch thick.
  16. Spread soft butter over the entire surface of the rectangle and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
  17. Roll up the dough jelly-roll style, stretching gently as you roll to create layers.
  18. Cut the roll into 1-inch thick slices.
  19. Place the slices in the prepared pans, allowing them to just touch but not crowd. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until the rolls are above the level of the pans.
  20. Bake at 325-350F (177C) for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
