Cinnamon Sugar “Elephant Ears” – Bon Appetit
Description
These Cinnamon Sugar Elephant Ears are the ultimate quick-fix dessert, transforming simple frozen puff pastry into golden, flaky spirals of joy. The dough is layered with a classic mix of granulated sugar and warm ground cinnamon, then rolled tightly and sliced into pinwheels. As they bake, the pastry puffs up dramatically, creating a crisp exterior with tender, flaky layers inside. They are dusted with more cinnamon sugar right after coming out of the oven for maximum aroma and flavor. Perfect for serving alongside coffee or tea, these treats are ideal for casual gatherings, brunches, or a sweet midnight snack. Despite their fancy appearance, they require minimal effort and come together in under an hour, making them a reliable crowd-pleaser any time of year.Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 400&# 194;°F (200ðC) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined.
-
Lightly sprinkle a work surface with about half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
-
Place the thawed puff pastry sheet on the sugared surface and sprinkle the top with the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture.
-
Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the pastry into a 12-inch square, trimming any uneven edges.
-
Lightly score a line down the center of the pastry using the back of a knife, without cutting all the way through.
-
Fold the right side of the pastry over to meet the center line, then fold the left side over to meet the center line.
-
Sprinkle the top layer with a little more cinnamon-sugar mixture.
-
Fold the right side over the center line again, then fold the left side over the center line to create a long, narrow rectangle about 1.5 inches wide.
-
Cut the pastry rectangle crosswise into 1/3-inch thick slices.
-
Arrange the slices cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them for puffing.
-
Freeze the baking sheet for 10 minutes to firm up the pastry.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
-
Using a metal spatula, carefully turn each pastry over and bake for another 5 minutes, or until rich golden brown.
-
Transfer the pastries to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
