Description

These homemade crescent rolls offer a comforting, bakery-style experience without the hassle of buying store-bought dough. Made with simple pantry staples like bread flour, yeast, and a touch of sugar, they rise to create a light, airy interior wrapped in a slightly crisp, golden exterior. The subtle sweetness from the sugar and richness from the melted margarine make them perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a side dish for soups and stews. While they require some time for rising, the process is straightforward, resulting in fresh, warm bread that smells incredible while baking. Serve them slathered with butter for a classic treat that family and friends will love.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water (105F to 115F) and let stand for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in the melted margarine, nonfat dry milk, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add 3 cups of the bread flour, one half cup at a time, stirring until the dough becomes too stiff to stir easily.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Add the remaining flour, one tablespoon at a time, only if necessary to prevent the dough from sticking to your hands.
  6. Place the dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning once to coat the top.
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, for 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
  8. Punch the dough down to release air and divide it in half.
  9. Cover and let the dough rest for 5 minutes to relax the gluten.
  10. Working with one portion at a time (cover the other to prevent drying), roll each portion into a 14-inch circle on a lightly floured surface.
  11. Cut each circle into 8 wedges like a pizza.
  12. Starting at the wide end of each wedge, roll up tightly to form a crescent shape.
  13. Place the rolls, point side down, 2 inches apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray.
  14. Lightly coat the tops of the rolls with cooking spray.
  15. Let rise, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until doubled in size.
  16. Preheat oven to 375F (191C).
  17. Bake at 375F (191C) for 10 minutes or until the rolls are lightly browned.
  18. Serve warm.
