Description

This Egg Nog Sourdough Bread is a festive twist on traditional baking, combining the tangy depth of a sourdough starter with the luxurious sweetness of egg nog. The dough is enriched with eggs, honey, and melted butter, creating a tender crumb and a golden, glossy crust. Infused with nutmeg and vanilla, it offers a comforting aroma that fills your kitchen during the holidays. Perfect for Christmas morning breakfast or as a decadent accompaniment to dinner, this bread is soft, slightly sweet, and utterly indulgent. It freezes well, making it a great make-ahead treat for busy seasonal gatherings.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Ensure your sourdough starter sponge is active and bubbly, ideally fed the night before.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 4 cups of sourdough starter sponge and the 3 eggs until well combined.
  3. Stir in the melted butter, honey, vanilla (or rum), and nutmeg until the mixture is smooth and aromatic.
  4. In a separate small bowl, combine the cream of tartar and salt.
  5. Add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients and stir gently to incorporate.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
  7. Place the dough into a lightly greased glass bowl, turning once to coat the top with oil.
  8. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 to 2 hours.
  9. Punch down the dough to release air bubbles and shape it into a loaf.
  10. Place the shaped loaf into a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan and let it rise again until it crests just above the rim, about 45-60 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 375&# 194;°F (190ðC).
  12. Bake the bread for 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190ðF.
  13. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
