Erupting Volcano Cake recipe image

This theatrical dessert is perfect for science-themed parties, birthdays, or Halloween celebrations. The cake is constructed from stacked round layers frosted to resemble a mountain, complete with green “vegetation” and chocolate base. The real magic happens at serving time: dry ice and hot water create billowing white smoke, while a red egg-white foam erupts like lava from the center. It’s a fun, interactive experience that delights guests of all ages. Note: This is a novelty cake meant for visual effect; the dry ice must be fully sublimated before consumption, and the egg foam should be eaten only if prepared with food-safe ingredients and proper hygiene. Best served immediately after the eruption for maximum impact.

Description

This theatrical dessert is perfect for science-themed parties, birthdays, or Halloween celebrations. The cake is constructed from stacked round layers frosted to resemble a mountain, complete with green "vegetation" and chocolate base. The real magic happens at serving time: dry ice and hot water create billowing white smoke, while a red egg-white foam erupts like lava from the center. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Bake six 8-inch round cakes using your favorite recipe or purchase them from a bakery. Allow cakes to cool completely.
  2. Purchase dry ice from an ice cream shop or store the day of the event. Store in a well-ventilated freezer container until use.
  3. Using a 1.5-inch cookie cutter or small juice glass, cut a circular hole through the center of the top two cake layers.
  4. Stack the cake layers on a large platter, trimming each successive layer to be slightly smaller to form a pyramid shape.
  5. Frost the entire cake with chocolate frosting, smoothing the sides to resemble a volcano mountain.
  6. Add green frosting highlights around the base and sides to simulate vegetation.
  7. Line the central hole with aluminum foil, shaping it around the juice glass mold to create a secure well.
  8. Separate one egg, discarding the yolk. Place the egg white in a small bowl.
  9. Add 1.5 teaspoons sugar and 2-3 drops red food coloring to the egg white. Beat until thick and foamy, but not stiff peaks.
  10. Just before serving, place 2-3 small chunks of dry ice into the foil-lined well.
  11. Pour the red egg white foam over the dry ice in the well.
  12. Bring the cake to the table. Pour 1-2 ounces of hot tap water into the well to activate the eruption.
  13. Watch as white smoke billows and red foam erupts like lava. Serve cake slices to guests after the effect subsides and dry ice has fully sublimated.
