Fresh Mint Liqueur
Description
This homemade mint liqueur transforms fresh garden mint into a smooth, aromatic spirit perfect for sipping or mixing in cocktails. Unlike commercial brands, this recipe allows you to control the sweetness and intensity of the mint flavor. The process involves infusing high-proof vodka with fresh mint leaves, then blending it with a simple sugar syrup and a touch of glycerin for a luxurious mouthfeel. The result is a crisp, refreshing beverage with a beautiful natural green hue. It makes an excellent gift for holidays or a sophisticated addition to your home bar. Store in a cool, dark place and let it age for the best flavor development.Ingredients
Directions
-
Wash fresh mint leaves thoroughly in cold water several times to remove dirt.
-
Gently shake or pat the mint leaves dry with a clean towel.
-
Snip each mint leaf in half or thirds, discarding the woody stems.
-
Lightly pack the cut mint leaves to measure out 1 1/4 cups.
-
Combine the prepared mint leaves and 3 cups of vodka in a clean, airtight glass jar.
-
Seal the jar tightly and let it stand in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks, shaking it occasionally.
-
After 2 weeks, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the mint leaves, discarding the solids.
-
In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water.
-
Bring the sugar and water mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
-
Remove the syrup from heat and allow it to cool completely to room temperature.
-
Pour the cooled sugar syrup into the mint-infused vodka and stir well to combine.
-
Add 1 tsp of glycerin and optional food coloring drops (8 green, 2 blue) to achieve desired color and texture.
-
Transfer the finished liqueur into clean bottles or jars for secondary aging.
-
Let the liqueur age for an additional 1 to 3 months in a cool, dark place before serving for best flavor.
