Garlic Squares
Description
These Garlic Squares are a comforting, savory treat that bridges the gap between a hearty scone and a cheesy appetizer. Featuring a rich dough infused with fresh dill and parsley, they are topped with slowly caramelized onions and roasted garlic, then blanketed in sharp cheddar cheese. The result is a crispy, golden crust giving way to a soft, flavorful interior. Perfect for brunch spreads, holiday parties, or as a unique side dish to soups and stews, these squares offer a warm, home-style appeal. They are easy to prepare with pantry staples and deliver big flavor in every bite.Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 450F (230C).
-
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped garlic and thinly sliced onions. Saut gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender but not browned. Remove from heat and set aside.
-
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
-
Add the 1/4 cup of cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal with some pea-sized butter pieces remaining.
-
Stir in the chopped parsley and dill. Pour in the milk and mix just until the dough is evenly moist and comes together; do not overmix.
-
Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and press it gently into the prepared pan to form an even layer.
-
Spread the sauted garlic and onion mixture evenly over the top of the dough. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese over the vegetables.
-
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the squares are cooked through.
-
Allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before slicing into squares and serving.
