Description

These Ham Cakes are a classic comfort food that transforms simple ingredients into a satisfying main course or hearty appetizer. By combining chopped ham with fresh soft breadcrumbs, celery, and onion, you create a moist interior that contrasts beautifully with the crispy, golden crust formed during pan-frying. The addition of mustard and Worcestershire sauce adds a savory depth and slight tang that cuts through the richness of the pork. They are perfect for using up leftover holiday ham or as a quick weeknight dinner served alongside a crisp salad or mashed potatoes. The texture is tender yet firm, making them easy to handle and deliciously flavorful in every bite.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of chopped or ground ham with 1 cup of fresh soft bread crumbs.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of margarine in a skillet over medium heat; add chopped onion and celery and sauté until softened and wilted, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the sautéed onion and celery mixture to the bowl with the ham and bread crumbs.
  4. In a separate small bowl, beat together 2 eggs, 2 teaspoons of prepared yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
  5. Pour the egg mixture into the ham bowl and mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  6. Form the mixture into 18 slightly flattened balls or patties; place them on a plate and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  7. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of margarine and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  8. Once the oil is shimmering and hot, carefully slide the ham cakes into the pan in batches to avoid crowding.
  9. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the cakes are dark golden brown and heated through.
  10. Transfer cooked cakes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil before serving.

Note

Store leftover ham cakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven to maintain crispiness.

You can substitute margarine with butter for a richer flavor. Fresh breadcrumbs can be replaced with dry breadcrumbs if soaked in a little milk or water first.

Chilling the patties before frying helps them hold their shape. Do not overcrowd the pan when frying to ensure even browning.
