Description

This Ham Strata is the ultimate make-ahead breakfast or brunch dish, perfect for weekend gatherings or busy mornings. Layers of soft white bread soak up a rich custard of eggs and milk, while savory chunks of ham and sharp cheddar cheese provide a hearty, satisfying bite. The addition of fresh celery and green peppers adds a subtle crunch and brightness that cuts through the richness. It bakes up golden and fluffy, with a texture similar to a savory bread pudding. Serve it warm with a side of fruit or juice for a complete meal that feels both indulgent and home-style.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut 12 slices of white bread into cubes or halves and arrange them in a single layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs and 3 cups of milk until well combined.
  4. Stir in 1/3 cup of mayonnaise, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper into the egg mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine chopped cooked ham, chopped chicken or turkey, chopped celery, chopped green pepper, chopped onion, and 1 package (6 oz) of sharp cheddar cheese slices cut into strips.
  6. Sprinkle half of the meat and vegetable mixture evenly over the bread layer in the baking dish.
  7. Pour half of the egg and milk mixture over the ingredients.
  8. Add another layer of bread cubes, then top with the remaining meat and vegetable mixture.
  9. Pour the remaining egg mixture over the top, ensuring all bread is saturated. Press down gently with a spatula to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  10. Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  11. Remove from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
  12. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  13. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
