Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C).
  2. In a 4-quart saucepan, brown the Italian sausage over medium heat. Remove sausage from pan and drain off excess fat.
  3. In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms, green pepper strips, and chopped onion. Saut until tender but not browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the all-purpose flour into the vegetable mixture and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Gradually stir in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Cook, stirring constantly over medium-low heat, until the mixture begins to boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 1 minute, stirring frequently.
  7. Blend in 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, grated parmesan cheese, and pepper until the cheeses are melted and the mixture is smooth.
  8. Cook ziti according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  9. Stir the hot cooked ziti and browned sausage into the vegetable cheese mixture.
  10. Pour the mixture into a buttered 2-quart casserole dish.
  11. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  12. Bake covered at 350F (175C) for 30 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.

Note

For best results, ensure the ziti is cooked al dente before combining with the sauce, as it will continue to cook slightly in the oven.

You can substitute the Italian sausage with ground beef or turkey for a different flavor profile.

Feel free to add other vegetables like spinach or broccoli for extra nutrition.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.

For a richer flavor, replace half of the milk with heavy cream.
