Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare lasagna noodles according to package directions; drain well and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the Italian sausage, ground beef, chopped onion, and minced garlic until the sausage is no longer pink and the onion is tender.
  4. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, 2 teaspoons of the salt, basil, fennel seeds, and pepper.
  5. Bring the meat sauce to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low.
  6. Simmer, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. In a small bowl, blend together the ricotta cheese, beaten egg, parsley flakes, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  8. Spoon about 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce into the bottom of a 13x9-inch baking dish.
  9. Layer with 1/3 of the lasagna noodles, followed by 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce, 1/3 of the ricotta mixture, 1/3 of the olives, 1/3 of the mozzarella, and 1/3 of the Parmesan cheese.
  10. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with cheese on top.
  11. Cover the baking dish tightly with foil.
  12. Bake for 25 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and bake for about 20 minutes more, or until the cheese is bubbly and the lasagna is heated through.
  14. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
