Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  4. Add chopped onions and celery to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  5. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and continue sautéing for another 5-7 minutes until tender and liquid has evaporated.
  6. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the mayonnaise until well combined.
  7. Cut 3 slices of bread into cubes and place them in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  8. Spread the mushroom mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  9. Cut 3 more slices of bread into cubes and layer them on top of the mushroom mixture.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and beaten eggs.
  11. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and mushroom layers.
  12. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  13. Spread the cream of mushroom soup evenly over the chilled casserole.
  14. Cut the remaining 2 slices of bread into cubes and scatter them on top of the soup.
  15. Bake uncovered for 1 hour.
