Description

These Nana’s Yeast Rolls are the ultimate comfort food, bringing warmth and nostalgia to any table. Made with a simple combination of flour, yeast, and melted Crisco, these rolls boast an incredibly tender, fluffy texture and a rich, buttery flavor. The secret lies in the melted shortcake fat, which creates a crumb that is light yet substantial. Perfect for soaking up gravy at a holiday dinner or serving alongside soup on a chilly evening, these rolls are a family favorite that disappears quickly. They are easy to make from scratch, requiring just a little patience for the dough to rise. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Dissolve the sugar, salt, and Crisco in the 1/2 cup of hot water, stirring until smooth.
  2. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the 1/2 cup of warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  3. Combine the melted Crisco mixture and the yeast mixture in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Add the egg and beat well.
  5. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape into individual rolls.
  8. Place rolls on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Note

For a richer flavor, brush the warm rolls with melted butter immediately after removing them from the oven.

You can substitute the Crisco with unsalted butter for a slightly different taste.

If the dough feels too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time. If too dry, add a teaspoon of warm water.

Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
