Description

This Nutty Tea Ring is a comforting, pull-apart bread that strikes the perfect balance between savory dough and sweet filling. The soft, rich interior is infused with the tang of sour cream, while the center bursts with warm cinnamon, chewy dried apricots, and buttery pecan pieces. It resembles a coffee cake but has the tender, airy texture of a classic braided bread. Ideal for weekend breakfasts, afternoon tea, or a sweet treat alongside your favorite cup of coffee, this recipe brings a homemade warmth to any occasion.

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour, the 1/4 cup sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the sour cream, water, and 2 tablespoons of the butter (or margarine) until hot to the touch but not boiling.
  3. Pour the hot liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and beat for 2 minutes on low speed.
  4. Add the egg and beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.
  5. Stir in the remaining 1 1/4 cups of flour, one tablespoon at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 4 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat the top with grease. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  8. Punch the dough down to release air bubbles.
  9. Roll the dough into a 16x9 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  10. Spread the remaining 4 tablespoons of softened butter evenly over the dough.
  11. In a small bowl, combine the chopped apricots, pecan pieces, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and cinnamon; sprinkle this mixture evenly over the dough.
  12. Roll up the dough tightly from the long side, like a jelly roll, and seal the seam.
  13. Place the roll seam-side down on a greased cookie sheet.
  14. Seal the ends together to form a ring shape.
  15. Cut slits 2/3 of the way through the ring at 1-inch intervals.
  16. Turn each cut section on its side to create a flower-like pattern.
  17. Cover the ring and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes, or until almost doubled.
  18. Bake at 375°F (191°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  19. Remove from the baking sheet and cool on a wire rack.
  20. Mix the powdered sugar with enough milk to make a thin glaze and drizzle over the cooled tea ring.
