Ingredients

Directions

  1. Grease a large cookie sheet and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, dissolve the dry yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add 2 cups of flour, sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 cup hot water, milk, 1/4 cup softened butter, and the egg to the yeast mixture.
  4. Using an electric mixer on low speed, blend ingredients until just moistened.
  5. Beat the mixture on medium speed for 2 minutes to develop the gluten.
  6. By hand, stir in the remaining 2 cups of flour to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  7. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size, about 45 to 60 minutes.
  8. While dough rises, prepare the filling: Melt 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan. Add chopped onions, Parmesan cheese, sesame seeds, garlic powder, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and paprika. Cook over low heat until onions are soft and fragrant. Cool slightly.
  9. Once the dough has doubled, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured board.
  10. Knead the dough briefly until it is smooth and no longer sticky.
  11. Roll the dough out into an 18x12-inch rectangle.
  12. Spread the cooled onion filling evenly over the entire surface of the dough.
  13. Cut the dough lengthwise into three 18x4-inch strips.
  14. Beginning with the 18-inch side, tightly roll up each strip into a log.
  15. Seal the edges and ends of each roll.
  16. Place the three rolls on the prepared cookie sheet and braid them together.
  17. Cover the braided bread and allow it to rise again until doubled in size, about 45 to 60 minutes.
  18. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  19. Bake the bread for 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  20. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.
