Description

These Orange Danish Delight rolls are a show-stopping treat perfect for brunches, holiday mornings, or special family gatherings. The dough is enriched with eggs and butter, yielding a tender, pillowy crumb that is subtly sweetened with vanilla and brightened by fresh orange zest. Each roll is layered with a warm cinnamon-sugar filling and baked until golden brown. A glossy orange juice glaze and a scattering of toasted pecan halves add a delightful crunch and citrusy finish.

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a small bowl; let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened margarine, sugar, salt, and scalded milk (cooled to lukewarm).
  3. Stir in vanilla extract, orange peel, 2 whole eggs, 1 egg yolk, and the yeast mixture.
  4. Gradually add the flour, beating well after each addition, until a stiff dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1/2 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line three cookie sheets with foil, turning up the edges by one inch, and grease the foil.
  8. Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a 20 x 10-inch rectangle.
  9. Brush dough with 2 tablespoons of melted margarine and sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar.
  10. Fold the dough into thirds (like a letter), turn 90 degrees, and repeat the brushing, sugaring, and folding process two more times.
  11. Roll the dough back out to a 20 x 10-inch rectangle. Spread the remaining melted margarine over the surface.
  12. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over the dough.
  13. Cut the dough into two 10-inch squares.
  14. Roll each square up tightly in a jelly-roll fashion.
  15. Cut each roll into 12 slices, yielding 24 rolls total.
  16. Place eight rolls into each foil-lined pan, flattening each roll slightly to 1/4 inch thick.
  17. Whisk together orange juice and the reserved egg white; brush this mixture over all the rolls.
  18. Sprinkle 1/2 cup pecans and 2 tablespoons sugar over each pan, pressing pecans gently into the dough.
  19. Cover and let rolls rise for 30 minutes until light and puffy.
  20. Bake for 17-20 minutes until golden brown.
  21. Remove from pans immediately and serve warm.
