Description

These Pecan Turtle Bars are a decadent twist on the classic candy, baked into a chewy, buttery shortbread crust. The base is pressed firmly into the pan, topped with toasted pecan halves, and then smothered in a homemade caramel sauce made from butter and brown sugar. Once baked until bubbling, the bars come out of the oven to receive a generous sprinkle of milk chocolate pieces, which melt slightly and get swirled into a marbled pattern. The result is a perfect balance of textures: the crisp-tender crust, the crunchy nuts, the sticky-sweet caramel, and the smooth chocolate. These bars are ideal for potlucks, holiday cookie exchanges, or simply satisfying a serious sweet tooth. They store well in the fridge, making them a convenient treat to grab anytime.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC).
  2. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup softened butter.
  3. Beat at medium speed until the mixture resembles fine crumbs, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Press the crumb mixture evenly onto the bottom of an ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan to form a crust.
  5. Sprinkle 1 cup of pecan halves evenly over the unbaked crust.
  6. In a small saucepan, combine 2/3 cup butter and the remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar.
  7. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is bubbly and smooth.
  8. Continue cooking and stirring for 1/2 to 1 minute more, just to ensure the sugar is fully dissolved.
  9. Pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the pecans and crust in the pan.
  10. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbling around the edges.
  11. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle milk chocolate pieces over the hot bars.
  12. Let stand for 2-3 minutes to allow the chocolate to melt slightly.
  13. Use a knife to gently swirl the melted chocolate into the caramel layer.
  14. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into 48 bars.

Note

Storage: Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Substitutions: You can use dark chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate for a richer flavor. Walnuts can be used in place of pecans if preferred.

Tip: For clean cuts, use a sharp knife and wipe the blade clean between cuts. Chilling the bars in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before cutting can also help prevent the caramel from sticking to the knife.

Safety: Be careful when handling the hot caramel sauce as it can cause burns. Ensure the saucepan is heat-safe and stir continuously to prevent scorching.
