Description

These Poppy Seed Rolls are a comforting treat that combines tender, homemade bread with a rich, sweet filling. The dough is simple to make, requiring just basic pantry staples like flour, milk, and butter, resulting in a soft, elastic texture that rises beautifully. Inside, a luscious poppy seed filling provides a nutty, aromatic flavor, while chopped walnuts add a delightful crunch. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a sweet snack with coffee, these rolls bring a touch of international bakery style to your kitchen.

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine milk, butter, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and cool to lukewarm.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve active dry yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, yeast mixture, 2 beaten eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the top with grease. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
  7. Let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  8. Punch the dough down to release air bubbles. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  9. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 12x18 inch rectangle.
  10. Spread the poppy seeds evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides. Sprinkle 1 cup of chopped walnuts over the poppy seeds.
  11. Starting with the long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Pinch the edges to seal.
  12. Place the roll on a large greased baking sheet, seam side down. Curve the ends slightly to form a crescent shape.
  13. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  14. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  15. Beat the remaining 1 egg with 1 teaspoon of water. Brush the egg wash over the top of the risen roll.
  16. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  17. Cool on a wire rack.
  18. Drizzle with confectioners sugar icing and sprinkle with the remaining chopped walnuts before serving.
