Description

This hearty Sausage Cheese Strata is the ultimate comfort food for weekend brunches or holiday mornings. The secret lies in the overnight soak, allowing the white bread to absorb the savory custard mixture of eggs, milk, white wine, and Dijon mustard. As it bakes, the strata transforms into a golden, custardy casserole with distinct layers of spicy sausage and melted cheese. The addition of white wine adds a subtle depth, while fresh green onions provide a bright, fresh finish. Its easy to assemble the night before, making it a stress-free option for feeding a crowd. Serve it warm with a side of fresh fruit or a simple green salad for a balanced, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325F (165C).
  2. Lightly butter a 9x12 inch glass baking dish.
  3. Cut the white bread slices into 1/4-inch cubes, leaving the crusts on.
  4. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bulk sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain excess grease.
  5. Spread a layer of bread cubes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  6. Top the bread with half of the cooked sausage and 1 cup of the grated cheese.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread cubes, sausage, and most of the remaining cheese, reserving a small amount for the top.
  8. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, white wine, garlic powder, and Dijon mustard until smooth and well combined.
  9. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and sausage in the baking dish.
  10. Press down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the liquid. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  11. Remove the strata from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes while the oven preheats.
  12. Uncover the dish and bake for 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  13. During the last 10 minutes of baking, sprinkle the remaining cheese and chopped green onions over the top.
  14. Remove from the oven and let stand for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
