As it bakes, the strata becomes golden and custardy on the inside while developing a slightly crisp top. Its an excellent make-ahead meal that improves with time, allowing the flavors to meld overnight. Serve it warm, garnished with fresh green onions, for a satisfying and elegant start to your day.Ingredients
Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 325F (165C). Lightly butter a 9x12-inch glass baking dish.
-
Cut the white bread slices into 1/4-inch cubes, leaving the crusts on.
-
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bulk sausage until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
-
Spread half of the bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
-
Top the bread with half of the cooked sausage and 1 cup of the grated cheese.
-
Repeat the layering with the remaining bread cubes, sausage, and half of the remaining cheese.
-
In a large bowl, beat the eggs until light and lemon-colored.
-
Whisk in the milk, white wine, garlic powder, and Dijon mustard until well combined.
-
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layers in the baking dish. Press down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the liquid.
-
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
-
Remove from the refrigerator and let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes while the oven preheats.
-
Uncover and bake for 1 hour, or until the top is lightly browned and the center is set.
-
Remove from the oven and top with the remaining grated cheese and chopped green onions.
-
Let the strata stand for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Note
Storage: Cover leftovers tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350F until warmed through.
Variations: You can substitute the white bread with sourdough or brioche for a richer flavor. Feel free to mix cheeses, such as cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss, instead of using one type.
Substitutions: If you prefer not to use alcohol, replace the white wine with an equal amount of chicken or vegetable broth.
Tip: For a crispier top, broil the strata for the last 2-3 minutes of baking, watching closely to prevent burning.
