Description

These classic Scotch Eggs are the ultimate handheld snack, perfect for picnics, parties, or a hearty lunch. The dish features perfectly hard-boiled eggs wrapped in a layer of seasoned sausage meat, then coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried until golden brown. The result is a delightful contrast of textures: a crisp, savory exterior giving way to a tender sausage layer and a creamy, firm egg center. While traditionally served warm, they are equally delicious at room temperature or chilled. This recipe yields substantial portions, making it ideal for sharing. The rich flavor of the sausage complements the mild egg beautifully, creating a satisfying bite that has remained a favorite for generations. Serve with mustard or chutney for an extra kick of flavor.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Peel the hard-boiled eggs completely and pat them dry with paper towels.
  2. Divide the sausage meat into 8 equal portions, roughly 1/4 pound each.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, press each portion of sausage meat into a thin, flat disc.
  4. Wrap each egg tightly and evenly with a disc of sausage meat, ensuring no egg is exposed.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350&# 194;°F (175ðC).
  6. Gently lower the sausage-wrapped eggs into the hot oil.
  7. Fry for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until the sausage is golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Remove eggs from oil and drain on a rack lined with paper towels.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing in half for serving.

Note

Serve Scotch Eggs warm or at room temperature. They can be chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently or served cold.

For a lighter version, you can bake the wrapped eggs at 400ðF (200ðC) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.

Traditionally, Scotch Eggs are coated in breadcrumbs, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs before frying. This simplified version uses just the sausage meat, but you can add a breadcrumb coating for extra crunch if desired.

Ensure eggs are fully hard-boiled to prevent runny yolks from leaking during frying.
