Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C).
  2. Cut hot Italian sausages lengthwise in half and slice into 1/4-inch thick pieces.
  3. Pare potatoes and cut into 1-inch chunks. Boil in water to cover until tender, about 20 minutes.
  4. Place ground beef and sausage slices in a medium skillet. Cook, breaking up beef, over medium-high heat until meat loses pink color and releases juices.
  5. Add tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, and balsamic vinegar to the skillet.
  6. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally and breaking up tomatoes, for about 10 minutes.
  7. Stir in peas, basil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, oregano, and pepper. Simmer for 10 more minutes.
  8. Remove meat mixture from heat.
  9. Drain boiled potatoes and transfer to a large mixing bowl.
  10. Beat in milk, Parmesan cheese, butter, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste; continue to beat until smooth.
  11. Spoon meat mixture into a 2-quart shallow casserole dish.
  12. Spoon potato mixture on top and spread evenly to the edges.
  13. Bake until golden and bubbling, about 45-50 minutes.
  14. Let stand 10 minutes before serving hot.

Note

Hot Italian sausages should be cut lengthwise in half and sliced 1/4 inch thick.

Potatoes should be pared and cut into 1 inch chunks for even boiling.

For best results, use russet or Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamy mash.

If using fresh basil instead of dried, add it at the end of cooking to preserve flavor.

Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
