These Sourdough Pan Rolls offer the perfect balance of tangy sourdough flavor and soft, buttery richness. Made with a combination of active dry yeast for reliability and sourdough starter for depth, these rolls are incredibly tender and slightly sweet. They bake up with a beautiful golden crust that gives way to a fluffy interior. Ingredients

Directions

  1. Dissolve the dry yeast in the lukewarm water and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, the sugar, and the salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, half of the melted butter, the egg, 1 cup of sourdough starter, and the warm milk to the dry ingredients.
  4. Beat the mixture until smooth and well combined.
  5. Gradually beat in the remaining 2 cups of all-purpose flour until a soft dough forms.
  6. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  7. Butter a 9x13 inch baking pan with about half of the remaining melted butter.
  8. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 15 large balls, placing them onto the prepared baking pan.
  9. Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  11. Drip the remaining melted butter over the tops of the rolls.
  12. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.

Note

Sourdough Starter: Use active, bubbly sourdough starter at room temperature for the best flavor and rise. If your starter is cold from the fridge, let it come to room temperature first.

Milk Temperature: The milk should be warm (about 110 degrees F), but not hot. If it is too hot, it can kill the yeast.

Storage: Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage. Reheat in a warm oven before serving.

Variation: For a richer flavor, you can substitute half of the water with milk in the yeast activation step.
