Sourdough Rocky Road Loaf
Description
This Sourdough Rocky Road Loaf is a unique twist on the classic dessert, combining the tangy depth of sourdough starter with the sweet, indulgent flavors of rocky road ice cream. The dough is enriched with butter, milk, and eggs for a tender crumb, then filled with a cinnamon-sugar mixture, chopped nuts, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and miniature marshmallows. As it bakes, the marshmallows melt into gooey pockets while the chocolate spreads, creating a marbled effect throughout the loaf. It makes for an impressive weekend baking project or a special treat for breakfast. The contrast between the chewy bread, crunchy nuts, and soft chocolate creates a delightful texture in every slice. Serve warm with a pat of butter or enjoy as is for a sweet snack.Directions
-
Dissolve the dry yeast and 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar in the lukewarm water. Set aside until bubbly, about 5-10 minutes.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, yeast mixture, lukewarm milk, remaining granulated sugar, salt, egg, and cooking oil. Mix well.
-
Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
-
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the top. Cover with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
-
Punch down the risen dough. On a floured surface, roll it out into a 14-inch by 10-inch rectangle, approximately 1/2 inch thick.
-
Spread the softened butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough.
-
In a small bowl, mix together 1/3 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
-
Sprinkle the chopped nuts, chocolate chips, and miniature marshmallows evenly over the dough.
-
Starting from the long edge, roll up the dough jelly-roll style. Seal the edges tightly and shape into a loaf.
-
Place the loaf seam-side down into a well-greased loaf pan. Cover with a cloth and let rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until nearly doubled.
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
Bake the loaf for 40 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
-
Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before removing it to a wire rack to cool completely.
