Description

These Sweet Potato Rolls are a comforting twist on classic dinner bread. The natural sweetness and vibrant color of the sweet potato enrich the dough, creating rolls that are incredibly soft with a slightly chewy texture and a beautiful golden hue. They have a subtle, earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with savory stews, roasted meats, or simply with a pat of butter for breakfast. The milk and butter add a rich, indulgent mouthfeel, while the yeast gives them a light, airy lift. Perfect for holiday tables, potlucks, or a cozy weeknight dinner, these rolls are easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. Their unique flavor profile sets them apart from standard white rolls, offering a heartier, more interesting bite.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut the sweet potato into chunks.
  2. Place chunks in a pot of boiling, salted water.
  3. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes.
  4. Drain the sweet potatoes and peel the skins.
  5. Mash the sweet potato until completely smooth.
  6. Melt the butter in a small saucepan.
  7. Allow the mashed potato and melted butter to cool to warm temperature.
  8. Dissolve the yeast in 3 tablespoons of warm water.
  9. In a large bowl, combine the milk, one cup of sweet potato puree, melted butter, sugar, salt, and the yeast mixture.
  10. Gradually stir in 3 1/2 cups of flour.
  11. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  12. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, adding the remaining flour as needed to prevent sticking.
  13. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and turn to coat all sides.
  14. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm spot to rise.
  15. Let rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
  16. Butter two baking sheets.
  17. Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts.
  18. Cut each part into 12 equal pieces.
  19. Roll each piece into a 10-inch long rope.
  20. Tie each rope into a knot, tucking one end underneath and placing the other at the top center.
  21. Place the knotted rolls on the prepared baking sheets.
  22. Cover the rolls and let them rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  23. Beat the remaining egg with one tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.
  24. Brush each roll generously with the egg wash.
  25. Bake at 400°F (204°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
