Directions
-
In a small saucepan, scald 1/2 cup milk. Stir in 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, and 3 tablespoons margarine until melted and combined.
-
Allow the milk mixture to cool until it is lukewarm to the touch.
-
In a large mixing bowl, dissolve 1 package of active dry yeast in 1 1/2 cups warm water.
-
Add the cooled milk mixture and 3 cups of unsifted flour to the yeast mixture. Beat until smooth.
-
Gradually stir in enough of the remaining flour (3 1/2 to 4 cups) to form a stiff dough.
-
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat the top. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
-
Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
-
Punch down the dough to release air bubbles.
-
Divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
-
Cut one piece in half (for two bodies) and one piece into 14 smaller pieces (for heads, paws, ears, and noses).
-
Shape the large pieces into balls for the bodies and the smaller pieces into balls for the heads, paws, ears, and noses.
-
Place the body balls on greased baking sheets.
-
Place the head balls above the bodies, flattening them slightly. Pinch the seam where the head meets the body to secure.
-
Attach the small balls for paws, noses, and ears using a little water as glue.
-
Cover the shaped bears and let them rise again until doubled, about 1 hour.
-
Make small indentations in the ears with your finger.
-
Press raisins into the dough for eyes and belly buttons.
-
Mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon water to make an egg wash. Brush the bears generously with the mixture.
-
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
-
Cool on a wire rack before serving.
