Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, undissolved yeast, and salt.
  2. Heat milk, water, and butter in a saucepan until very warm (120-130ðF).
  3. Gradually add the warm liquid mixture to the dry ingredients.
  4. Beat for 2 minutes at medium speed with an electric mixer, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  5. Add the egg, vanilla, and 1/2 cup of the remaining flour; beat for 2 minutes at high speed, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  6. Using a spoon, stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 4-6 minutes.
  8. Cover the dough and let it rest on the floured surface for 10 minutes.
  9. Divide the dough in half.
  10. For the body, knead the chocolate chips into one half of the dough and form it into a large ball.
  11. Place the body dough on a greased baking sheet, flattening it slightly.
  12. Shape the remaining dough into a head, ears, and tail, attaching them to the body.
  13. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  14. Bake at 350ðF (177ðC) for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  15. Cool on a wire rack before serving.
