Description

This classic Chinese dessert transforms humble Bartlett pears into a tender, sweet treat that is as comforting as it is elegant. The gentle steaming process softens the fruit while preserving its natural juices, creating a delicate syrup that pools at the bottom of the bowl. The addition of orange honey provides a bright, floral sweetness that pairs beautifully with the subtle earthiness of preserved jujubes. This dish is incredibly simple to prepare, requiring minimal ingredients and active effort, making it an ideal last-minute dessert for family dinners or intimate gatherings. The warm, aromatic steam fills the kitchen, promising a soothing end to any meal. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled for a refreshing finish that highlights the pure flavors of the fruit.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Wash the pears thoroughly and carefully slice off the top quarter, leaving the stem intact if desired.
  2. Core each pear from the top down to the bottom, removing the seeds and tough center.
  3. Make four lengthwise cuts from the core outward into the flesh, being careful not to cut through the skin.
  4. Place each prepared pear into an individual heatproof bowl or dessert dish.
  5. Pack the cored center of each pear with minced preserved jujubes.
  6. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of orange honey over the top of each pear, allowing it to seep into the cuts.
  7. Bring water to a boil in a steamer and place the bowls on the steaming tray.
  8. Cover and steam the pears for approximately 30 minutes, checking occasionally to ensure they become tender but not mushy.
  9. Remove the tray from the heat and let the pears cool for about 30 minutes.
  10. Serve the pears at room temperature, spooning the accumulated syrup over the fruit.

Note

Preserved jujubes, also known as Chinese red dates, add a unique chewy texture and deep sweetness. If unavailable, you can substitute with dried figs or apricots, chopped finely.

For best results, choose pears that are ripe but still firm. Overripe pears may disintegrate during steaming.

This dessert can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled. The flavor profile changes slightly with each temperature, so experiment to find your preference.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently or serve cold.
